Hurricane Irma was one of the most catastrophic storms to ever hit Florida and other states along the east coast, leaving floods, power outages and widespread destruction in its path. If you and your family were affected by this hurricane, keep these tips in mind as you begin your recovery after Irma and assess the damage done to your home.
If any portion of your home flooded, don’t turn your electricity back on just yet. There is still a possibility of electrical shock or fire, especially in flooded areas around large appliances.
Many people turned to generators as alternate power sources during widespread outages in Irma’s aftermath. However, placing generators inside your home or even outside near a window can put you and your family at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning.

[/pullquote]With so much damage, you might be tempted to try to fix electrical issues on your own. Attempting DIY electrical repairs can be very dangerous and even life-threatening, and should be left to the electric company or other trained professionals.
Carefully walk through your home and take photos of and list any damages you see. This documentation will come in handy when you go to file an insurance claim for hurricane damage.
Once you’ve documented your damages, contact your insurance company to file a claim. They should then send an public adjuster to your home for a further assessment of your damages and move the process along.
